History of Baseball.
Called the America's Pastime, Baseball has had an
important place in American culture. Most cultures have some sort of
stick and ball game, cricket being the most well-known in other
parts of the world. While its exact origins are unknown, most
historians agree that the game of baseball is based on the English
game of rounders.
Baseball became popular in the U.S. in the early 19th century,
and many sources report the growing popularity of a game called
baseball. At this time small towns formed teams and Baseball clubs
were formed in larger cities.
In 1845, Alexander Cartwright wanted to set down a list of rules
by which all team could play. Much of that original plan is still in
place today. Although legend has it that Baseball was invented by
Abner Doubleday.
The game's real father is considered to be Cartwright. The first
recorded baseball contest took place a year later, in 1846 where
Cartwright's Knickerbockers lost to the New York Baseball Club in
Hoboken, New Jersey.
During the Civil War, the number of clubs fell dramatically, but
interest in Baseball was carried to other parts of the country by
Union soldiers. When the war ended there were more people playing
baseball than ever!
The amateur teams began to fade away as the best players became
professionals. The National Association of Baseball Players was the
first organized baseball league.
